GameKit

Summary

Update: I’ve recently been using GameKit again and am currently having trouble getting one of my orders fulfilled. I was due to receive my order of a Steam game pack several months ago and have asked the team of moderators for an update several times with no response. Based on this I can’t currently recommend using the service.

Update 2: Still no response from GameKit on my order. See this post for a bit more detail.

Note: Links may award me referral rewards such as in-app points or money.

GameKit is another online service which allows you to earn points and “experience” for playing games. These points can then be exchanged for games and additional content such as character skins.

I’m actually pretty impressed with the prizes you can earn and have claimed a number of Steam games without huge effort and zero cost.

Note: A couple of my Steam orders could not be redeemed as the keys had already been used. I’m in correspondence with their support team at the moment so hopefully this will be resolved shortly. It was not at all obvious to me how to contact support so that took a little while. I’ll amend this review if/when this issue is resolved.

How does it work?

GameKit is another online service which allows you to earn points and “experience” for playing games. Rather than exchanging these points for cash however, they are instead exchanged for prizes such as games which can be redeemed on the popular Steam platform or additional content (DLC) for games you already own.

Certain prizes are only available once you have reached a specified experience level and some prizes can only be redeemed rarely (e.g. the 40 point Steam key prize can only be redeemed once every year).

As with most services, the games you can earn points playing tend to be “freemium”, meaning that they can be played for free but purchases can be made to accelerate progress.

You can either purchase prizes outright using points or use them enter giveaways which are essentially competitions with a percentage chance of winning. The odds tend to be fairly good but you may of course end up with nothing.

In addition to games, you can also earn points and experience by:

  • logging in each day
  • completing offers (e.g. signing up for other services or free trials)
  • watching videos
  • rating photos
  • taking surveys and polls
  • inviting others to the service
  • Playing CS:Go

Opinion

I’m actually fairly impressed with the prizes you can earn. To date I’ve claimed 17 games without requiring a huge amount of effort and zero financial cost. Most were low value (worth between £0.39 and £1.69) but a couple were higher value (Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition and Sam Max Season One worth £11.49 and £22.99 respectively).

I also claimed some Steam gift vouchers worth about £5.

It’s worth noting that there is the risk of receiving duplicates when claiming, even within the same pack (e.g. if you claim a pack of 10 games, 2 or more may be duplicates). I think I was fairly luck as I received only one duplicate.

Another thing I noticed is that two or three of the games were “reviewer copies” and didn’t seem to be available for purchase via Steam so I assume GameKit received these for free to “review” which was a bit disappointing.

The only other quibble I have with the service is that it can take a few weeks to receive your prizes but I tended to forget about them and receiving them was then a nice surprise :-).
