Sweatcoin

Summary

Note: Links may award me referral rewards such as in-app points or money.

Sweatcoin is an iPhone and Android app which pays you in tokens to walk. These tokens can be exchanged for prizes which vary over time. Interestingly the Sweatcoin team plan to transform their currency into a real tradeable cryptocurrency which would be interesting if/when that happens.

Be warned that the Sweatcoin app is a potential battery drain but the effects seem to vary from phone to phone.

How does it work?

Sweatcoin is an iPhone and Android app which pays you to walk. The currency it uses is unsurprisingly called Sweatcoin, and these can be exchanged for goods and services. These change over time but include jewellery, phone cases and trial subscriptions to services.

Earn Sweatcoins by walking

At the higher end of the scale are (at the time of writing) an iPhone XS, a Samsung TV, $1000 cash or £1000 Thomas Cook holiday voucher. Before getting too excited it’s worth pointing out that these top end prizes require a very serious amount of walking, as each one costs 20,000 Sweatcoins. The conversion rate is:

1000 steps = 0.95 Sweatcoins

so you’ll need to walk significantly over 2 billion steps to cash out one of the top prizes. Having said that, I’ve been using the app for just under a month and I’ve accrued over 250 Sweatcoins which equates to over a quarter of a million steps so maybe it’s not so terrible after all. You can boost your Sweatcoin total every day by watching one 30 second video. Provided you remember to check in every day you will earn 1 coin for the first day, 2 for the second and 4 for the third. This cycle will then start again and you can repeat it as many time as you wish.

The potentially interesting thing about Sweatcoin is that you can send and receive it from other users and the Sweatcoin team plan to transform their currency into a real cryptocurrency which can be traded on exchanges. I’m not sure whether this will ever come to fruition. However, I have seen people selling (and buying) Sweatcoin on eBay so to some people at least it’s already seen as potentially valuable. One thing to bear in mind is that I’ve found the app to be relatively battery hungry so whether the rewards outweigh this is debatable.
